What to do if your luggage is lost?

What to Do If Your Luggage Is Lost?

In case your baggage is lost, it is crucial to report this right away.

This can be accomplished at the Baggage Service Office, generally located in proximity to the baggage carousels.

Make sure you have your passport, boarding pass, and baggage tag easily accessible. Sharing a picture of your bag can help speed up the process. If you don’t have a picture, providing a detailed description of your bag will be enough.

Upon completion of the report, you will receive a Property Irregularity Report and a unique reference number. Please ensure that you keep this document safe, as it will be needed to track your bag online. It may take up to 24 hours or longer to locate your lost baggage. Once found, your bag will be delivered to the address you provided, whether it is your residence or hotel.

Tracking Your Lost Baggage

The status of your lost baggage can be monitored online.

You can use the unique reference number provided on the Property Irregularity Report, which is given to you at the airport, to track your bag’s status online using the airline’s dedicated baggage tracing system.

Once Turkish Airlines staff have located your baggage, they will initiate contact with you.

Reimbursement of Expenses

If you’re in a situation where your baggage is lost and you’re left with no choice but to purchase essential items such as personal hygiene products, underwear, and necessary clothing, Turkish Airlines may cover these expenses. This is known as delayed baggage compensation. Please bear in mind that immediate payment is not possible.

It’s essential to note that the compensation only extends to essential items such as personal hygiene products, underwear, and necessary clothing – things you cannot do without.

Remember to keep hold of all your receipts, as these are required for submitting a claim for additional expenses. The deadline to file the claim and receive reimbursement is within 21 days of receiving your lost baggage, a deadline which mustn’t be missed.

Lost Baggage Compensation

If Turkish Airlines cannot find your baggage within 21 days, you might qualify for compensation of up to €1300 for the lost items. To be eligible, you need to provide Turkish Airlines with a detailed list of your luggage contents. To avoid missing any items, it’s a good idea to prepare this list in advance.

Turkish Airlines will deposit this compensation into your bank account. You are not obliged to accept any vouchers. After all, you can’t purchase a new suitcase with it, can you?

It’s not advisable to pack valuable items. It’s not recommended to pack valuable items such as electronics, artwork, or jewellery in your checked baggage according to the Montreal Convention and its Conditions of Carriage.

You can also submit a claim for any additional expenses.

Is Travel Insurance Necessary?

Is travel insurance a prerequisite to claim Turkish Airlines lost baggage compensation?

No, travel insurance is not a requirement to claim lost baggage compensation from an airline. However, travel insurance can offer an extra layer of protection and coverage for any costs incurred due to the loss of your baggage, including buying replacement items or clothing.

Possessing a travel insurance policy can help make your journey less stressful, particularly in unforeseen circumstances. Your insurance provider will handle the majority of the aftermath. Travel insurance is generally economical or might even be included in your debit or credit card benefits.

If the airline is responsible for lost or delayed baggage, you may qualify for compensation for essential purchases. You can get reimbursed by either the airline or your insurance provider. It’s crucial to keep all receipts when claiming expenses. Insurance claims might be easier than claiming directly from the airline.

Please remember, not all insurance policies cover baggage delays and losses.

Always determine what your travel insurance covers.

Travel Prepared

Having a backup plan for unexpected situations such as lost or delayed baggage while travelling is a smart approach. To prepare for such situations, pack an extra set of clothes and underwear in your carry-on bag. This will be useful if your checked-in baggage is delayed for a day or two.

Furthermore, ensure any crucial medications or valuable items are in your hand bag, providing you access to them even if your checked-in baggage gets misplaced during transit. To avoid any inconvenience, it’s important to anticipate and prepare for the possibility of baggage loss or delay.

What is your experience with baggage delays on Turkish Airlines flights? Has Turkish Airlines ever lost your baggage? Have you ever applied for Turkish Airlines lost baggage compensation?

Please note that the rules for compensation for delayed or lost baggage with Turkish Airlines are the same as those for other airlines. This is due to the Montreal Convention, which applies to the carriage of baggage on most international flights operated by Turkish Airlines and other airlines globally.
