1.1 Voluntary Denied Boarding
What is voluntary denied boarding?
As the name suggests, this is when you voluntarily agree to give up your seat. Whenever there is an overbooking, airline staff looks for volunteers ready to travel on a later flight. If you agree to something like this, it’s called voluntary boarding denial.
Usually airlines offer some perks to volunteers.
But that’s it, in this case, you aren’t entitled to denied boarding compensation from Turkish Airlines. It’s important to understand this. You don’t have to agree to an offer like this.
1.2 Involuntary Denied Boarding
There are situations when you don’t have a choice.
You may have a confirmed flight ticket. You may not agree to give up your seat. But you still may be denied boarding. Simply because someone has to be denied boarding. All passengers travelling with Turkish Airlines have a right to care.
If you are travelling from Europe, and you have to wait at the airport (3+ hours more than planned), you have a right to care from Turkish Airlines. In case of Turkish Airlines, the EU/UK Flight Compensation Regulations apply to its flights from the European Union and the UK. It includes also flight disruptions caused by extraordinary circumstances.
What does it mean for you as a passenger?
Turkish Airlines must offer you free meals and drinks in a reasonable relation to the waiting time, two free phone calls, e-mails or faxes. If the new flight offered by the airline leaves only on the next day, and you aren’t in your home city, the airline has to offer you free hotel accommodation and free airport transfer. Agreeing to these free services doesn’t affect your chances of getting compensation.

2.1 How Long Does It Take?
It depends on a number of factors.
Like the time of the year and country you are flying from.
For example, during the holidays it usually takes longer than normally. However, on average the process is around 2 to 3 months. That’s from the moment you make a claim until your denied boarding compensation is transferred to your bank account. Like with everything, there are also situations when it takes significantly longer. For example, if the case has to be taken to court.

3. How Much Can You Claim?
In the EU and the UK compensation amounts are fixed.
In most situations they range from €250 to €600.

This is also the amount you should be demanding, if claiming flight overbooking compensation yourself. Every passenger has a right to equal compensation. Turkish Airlinesmay offer you smaller compensation at some point. Many airlines do this. You don’t have to agree to that. The compensation amounts are regulated by law.
There’s one exception. When the flight distance is 3500+ kilometres and you reach your destination 3 to 4 hours later than planned, you are entitled only to 50% of the compensation amount (that means €300, not €600).
3.1 Turkish Airlines Voucher Code, Discounts or Cash?
According to the law, compensations have to be paid in cash.
Not in coupons or discount codes, but in cash. Or bank transfer. If the airline is offering you its coupons, know that you can say no. Say no to Turkish Airlines vouchers, if all you want is a money transfer to your bank account. You have such a right in Europe.
And again, this applies only to Turkish Airlines flights from Europe.

My flight was very cheap. It was a holiday sale. Can I still get full flight delay compensation?
Yes, absolutely — you can.
That’s because the amount of the compensation is fixed. Hence the price of the ticket doesn’t matter. Even if your flight was only 20 or 30 euro, you can still get up to 600 euro from the airline. Remember — you are paid for the inconvenience.
What if I don’t have travel insurance?
For this compensation you don’t need an insurance.
All thanks to the Regulation EC 261/2004 (and Regulation UK261). That is also one of the reasons why these laws have been created — to protect all air travellers equally. If your flight is 3+ hours late at the destination, you may have a right to flight delay compensation from Turkish Airlines.

Can my child get compensation from Turkish Airlines?
Yes, 100%.
The age doesn’t matter, same like the price of the ticket and insurance. If the flight is late, all passengers have equal rights to care from the airline and compensation for delay. The same rules apply also to infants without a dedicated seat.

Can I claim compensation for someone else? How it works?
Yes, you can.
Even if you weren’t on that flight yourself.
There is only one but. But you have to have a boarding pass and passport or ID copy. And the person you are claiming for will still have to sign the claim. Apart from that, yes, you can file a claim for delayed flight for another person.
How far back can I claim compensation? What about 2-3 year old flights?
It depends on the laws of the country.
Mostly 2-3 year old flights will be okay. You should definitely try to make a claim and / or let the professionals check the flight. But, of course, the sooner you make a claim, the better.
What to do if Turkish Airlines is refusing to pay compensation?
Turkish Airlines is refusing to pay compensation.
