Are you entitled to compensation? What are the regulations?
It can be frustrating when you’re waiting at the airport’s baggage carousel and your suitcase is missing. This is a common issue with air travel – your baggage may be misdirected or not loaded as scheduled on your connecting flight. Whatever the reason, it’s never pleasant when your baggage goes missing.

What to Do If Your Luggage Is Lost?
What to do when your baggage is delayed or even lost?
First and foremost, register the delayed/lost baggage without delay.
If you notice that your baggage is delayed, immediately inform the agent at the baggage claim area. To report a lost bag, you will need to present your passport, boarding pass, and baggage tag (a sticker usually attached to your boarding pass during check-in). Sharing a photo of your suitcase or any additional details can speed up the process,
The agent will note down your contact details and provide you with a Property Irregularity Report or PIR with a reference number for tracking. Keep the document safe.
If your baggage goes missing, it is typically found within the first day. Once your bag is located, the airline will contact you to arrange delivery.
Tracking Your Delayed Baggage
At the airport, you have been given a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) that has a unique reference number. Protect this document as you will need it to trace your baggage.
To stay informed about the status of your lost items, use the airline’s online baggage tracing service. The agents will give you the necessary information when you report your lost bag. Your name and PIR are essential details to utilize this baggage tracking service.
Bear in mind, that the number on your baggage tag is different from your PIR number.

Reimbursement of Expenses
Keep in mind that delayed baggage compensation means reimbursement of expenses in case of baggage delay.
Remember, if your baggage is lost, you can get reimbursed for essential purchases like toiletries and necessary clothing. Just keep the receipts, as you’ll need them when filing a claim. Only essential items can be claimed for reimbursement.
Claims need to be completed within 21 days from when the lost baggage is retrieved.
This reimbursement is often called “delayed baggage compensation”.
Lost Baggage (You Can Get Compensation)
Turkish Airlines has a period of 21 days to find and return your missing baggage.
If your delayed baggage is not located within 21 days, it’s officially classified as lost. When this occurs, you can submit a compensation claim to the airline. You could be entitled to receive up to €1300 in compensation.
It’s worth noting that it’s not recommended to put valuables like electronics, art, jewellery, and so on, in checked baggage. Turkish Airlines (or any airline, for that matter) is not responsible for compensating for the full value of such items, but to the limit stated in the Montreal Convention and their Conditions of Carriage.
To file a claim, you must provide your boarding pass, baggage tags, and the Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with your reference number. If you have additional costs while your baggage is delayed, you can claim them by presenting receipts for your purchases.
Is Travel Insurance Necessary
Do you need travel insurance to claim Turkish Airlines delayed baggage compensation?
No. You don’t need insurance to claim compensation. However, it is highly recommended to consider getting travel insurance before your trip.
Travel insurance can provide a safety net during your travels, particularly in the face of unforeseen situations. Having a travel insurance provider can help manage potential problems more efficiently, ensuring a smoother trip. Considering that many travel insurance policies are affordable, it’s worth investing in one or using a travel debit/credit card with insurance benefits.
If your baggage is lost or delayed through no fault of your own, you may be eligible for reimbursement for necessary purchases under your insurance policy. This might be a simpler process compared to dealing directly with the airline.
Make sure to contact your insurer before making any purchases and keep all your receipts. Without receipts, you won’t get a refund. It’s important to inquire about the details of the policy coverage, including whether it covers baggage delay claims.
Travel Prepared
When preparing for the unexpected loss or delay of baggage, it’s important to be proactive. Pack an extra set of clothes and undergarments in your carry-on bag. This is especially useful when travelling to tropical destinations where specific clothing and swimwear are necessary.
Packing medications and high-value items in your hand bag is also recommended as a preventative measure in the unlikely event that your checked baggage is misplaced.
What is your experience with baggage delays on Turkish Airlines flights? Has Turkish Airlines ever lost your baggage? Have you ever applied for “Turkish Airlines delayed baggage compensation” (reimbursement of expenses in case of baggage delay)?
Please note that the rules for compensation for lost or delayed baggage with Turkish Airlines are the same as those for other airlines. This is due to the Montreal Convention, which applies to the carriage of baggage on most international flights operated by Turkish Airlines and other airlines globally.
